Sobre este artículo

Ipswich: Limited Editions Club. Fine with no dust jacket. 1961. Limited/Numbered Signed Edition. Hardcover. Slightest scuffing to bottom of slipcase.; Like much of Thackeray's work, Pendennis is a satire on the foibles of human nature and high society. Somewhat autobiographical, it reads like a farce with the frequently bewildered Pendennis climbing through London's upper crust from one doomed romance to another, gambling, and stumbling through social interaction. This author of Vanity Fair was able to take more time with this novel than the previous one and Pendennis was originally published in 20 periodical installments. This understated presentation by Limited Editions Club is in 2 slipcased volumes and is copy 817 of an edition of 1500. Signed on the colophon of Volume II by Charles W. Stewart who was commissioned to produce thirty illustrated plates in his characteristic ink and color wash. Stewart had a multi-faceted creative mind and was also a ballet dancer, costume designer, and set designer for theater. The Introduction by Robert Cantwell gives a good context for Thackeray's situation and state of mind during the writing of the manuscript. Each volume includes a table of Contents and a List of Illustrations. Typography by John Lewis, but LEC overlooked informing us about the font. Printed by W.S. Cowell, Ipswich, Suffolk, England, on fine, stiff, parchment-colored paper. Yellow top stain to head of text blocks. Bound in smooth yellow cloth over boards, designs and ornaments in blind span both covers and spine. Gray spine labels with gilt titles. Both volumes clean and Fine in a Near Fine slipcase.; Color Drawings; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 714 pages; Signed by Illustrator .

Sinopsis

Written immediately after Vanity Fair, Pendennis has a similar atmosphere of brooding disillusion, tempered by the most jovial of wits. But here Thackeray plunders his own past to create the character of Pendennis and the world in which he lives: from miserable schoolboy to striving journalist, from carefree Oxbridge to the high (and low) life of London. The result is a superbly panoramic blend of people, action and background. The true ebb and flow of life is caught and the credibility of Pen, his worldly uncle, the Major, and many of the other characters, extends far beyond the pages of the novel. Held together by Thackeray's flowing, confident prose, with its conversational ease of tone, Pendennis is as rich a portrait of England in the 1830s and 40s as it is a thorough and thoroughly entertaining self-portrait.
