Blagden. 24mo. xxviii, viii, 169, [207]-216pp., illustrated with a woodcut frontispiece portrait. Contemporary small owner's name in ink on recto and verso of the front free endpaper. In the original mottled calf, gilt spine with black leather titling label. The boards are rubbed and chipped on the spine and back cover, moderate toning and scattered foxing, a good copy. Johnson's classic work, often compared to Voltaire's *Candide*. An uncommon, early American edition.

Sinopsis

Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was the leading literary scholar and critic of his time. A writer of vigor, power, passion, and profundity, he helped to shape and define the Augustan Age.
