LONDON: GEORGE ROUTLEDGE AND SONS, 1859. NEW EDITION . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. THE HISTORY OF THE REIGN OF FERDINAND AND ISABELLA THE CATHOLIC OF SPAIN (3 VOLS) 1859; HISTORY OF THE REIGN OF PHILIP THE SECOND, KING OF SPAIN (3 VOLS) 1861; HISTORY OF THE CONQUEST OF PERU (3 VOLS) 1862; HISTORY OF THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO (3 VOLS), 1870; by WILLIAM H. PRESCOTT pub by GEORGE ROUTLEDGE AND SONS 1859-1870, LONDON, NEW EDITION, HALF CALF, VERY GOOD This is a really unusual set of the works of Prescott, which looks to have been amassed by a Victorian collector over several years The owner had them bound in matching bindings. The works here are: Ferdinand and Isabella; The Conquest of Mexico, Reign of Philip II, and The Conquest of Peru. All have similar / matching half calf bindings brown leather, with marbled paper boards and red inked page edges. The spines have one red label and one green label each, black dentelles and lines to the raised bands and compartment edges, with a gilt cross to the centre of each compartment. All boards and endpapers are burnished and marbled. There is slight variation in the gilt stamped cross designs which tells me that the binding of each set was done at different times, possibly by different binders as the original owner bought them. The leather to the Peru set is a little darker. So, an interesting set with an intriguing history, that looks great on the shelf. Boards are very lightly rubbed and there is minor rubbed leather edges, prelims foxed, slight mellowing to page edges, otherwise clean. Note on the Author: William Hickling Prescott was was an American historian and Hispanist, who is widely recognized by historiographers to have been the first American scientific historian. An important author in an unusual uniform binding. Very good.
