Folio, contemporary calf, rebacked, 699 pp. Front endpaper torn and chipped with rubber stamp of early owner, some minor wear to binding, contents toned, with some marginal foxing and browning; nice tight copy. William Sewel (1653-1720) was a translater, lexicograper, and Quaker historian that was born in the Neherlands.His family were Quakers, and because he had knowledge of English, German, French and Latin he got work as a translator, journalist and editor. While he translated a lot of Quaker works, he also translated the works of many important writers of his time. However, his most significant accomplishment was this work, which was first published in 1717 in Dutch, and revised and translated into English in 1722. ODNB.
