Very Good. 3 volumes: xiv, 391 p., 60 leaves of plates; xi, 403 p., 44 leaves of plates; xi, 417 p., 70 leaves of plates: frontispieces, many portraits; 24 cm. Very dark green cloth with gilt-stamped spine titles. Top page edges gilt. Oval stamp on front fixed endpapers of Moore Institute School of Design Library; bookplate on front fixed endpapers of Moore Institute of Art Library; Moore College of Art Library stamp at foot of title pages. This was the first book on the history of art in the United States. The author, William Dunlap (1766-1839), was an American portrait painter, playwright, and theater manager. He helped to found the National Academy of Design in 1825, and he also wrote several books, publishing this work in 1834. In this edition, the editors have employed "judicious pruning and corrections of conspicuous errors" in the original text and have added addenda containing "brief accounts of several hundred painters, engravers, sculptors, and architects . . . all of those working before 1835" known to them. Howes, D571: "An American Vasari." In Very Good Condition: ex-library, as described above; faint remains of paper spine label at tail of spines; otherwise, clean and bright.
