Philadelphia: Printed For The Author by S. C. Ustick, & Co, 1797. First Edition. HB. Quarter tan leather and blue marbled paper covered boards, 12 mo, vii, [2], 10-179 pp. plus 1 page errata (with paper repair) at rear. Lacking the frontis illustration. Account of the authors travels from Charleston to West Africa between 1793-1795 to the land of the Ibo's, and his observations of the war then in progress between the Ebo and Golo kings. Hawkins gives much information about the customs and social life of the people of West Africa, as well as the slave trade. He returned to America with a shipload of slaves, having gone blind from some illness contracted during his voyages. Owner's name front paste-down and early owner's name, dated 1799, on title page. Title page and page 11 have early paper repairs. Several pages of the introduction have closed tears at the outer margin. This copy in a later 19th century binding, with newer endpapers. Covers show edge wear, leather backstrip dry and flaking, both front and rear joints cracked with hinges reinforced. Book condition Good-.
