Sobre este artículo

London: William Goldsmith and David Steel, 1773. (4),xvii, 294 pp. Quarto ( 27.5 X 22 cm.) Original half calf and marbled boards. Five raised bands. Simple gilt lines. Title label probably replaced at a later date. Spine a bit mottled. Marbled paper moderately worn. All edges dyed yellow and the top edge dust soiled. original endpapers. Two early bookplates on the front pastedown. Text block with wide margins. A few leaves, more in the middle, have moderate foxing on the fore edge but not effecting the text. 16 plates composed of maps and illustration, some natural history and many folding. A few leaves with a small marginal repair to the bottom, not effecting the text. Generally very clean except for the minor foxing. With the name T. Clare's Sol on the title page in an old hand. Hill P. 229. Spence 907. The first edition was published in French in 1769. The voyage was undertaken by Bougainville at his personal expense to attempt to establish a French colony in the southern islands. The colony did not go over well with the Spanish and eventually was turned over to the protesters. The first English edition appeared in 1771 with the second edition being mostly a reprint. Penerty was a Benedictine Monk and much of the work relates to the Natural History of the area with an ethnographic element. Not a common title in a nice contemporary binding like this. The two bookplates are very interesting with on being for M.H. Bloxam whose collection I believe went Rugby School. 1773
