Sobre este artículo

San Diego: Harvest / Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1992. First Harvest Edition, First Printing. Paperback. Very good. First edition of Hitler by Joachim C. Fest, inscribed by author Colleen McCullough to U.S. Ambassador Edward Perkins.. Thick octavo, vii, 844pp. Paperback. Stated "First Harvest/HBJ edition 1992" with full letter line. Solid text block, sunning to spine, faint toning to endpapers, occasional annotation, price crossed out on rear cover, a very good example. Robinson [McCullough] Family bookplate on verso of front cover. Inscribed by Colleen McCullough on half-title: "Dear Ed & Lucy, Ignore the bookplate! Cancelled. Much love / Col." Also laid-in fax from Lucy Perkins to a "Barbara W." on McCullough's letterhead. Colleen McCullough (1937-2015), an Australian author, was best known for her novel The Thorn Birds. She married Ric Robinson, a member of the Norfolk Legislative Assembly, in 1984.
Dr. Edward J. Perkins (1928-2020) served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, as well as Liberia, South Africa, and Australia throughout his 25-year foreign service career. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan appointed Perkins to serve as ambassador to South Africa in hopes of fending off a congressional override to his veto of economic sanctions against the country. It was a controversial decision amidst apartheid in South Africa, and many Black leaders urged Perkins to not take the role. Perkins accepted the position and served until 1989, one year before Nelson Mandela was released from prison. He was appointed U.N. Ambassador by George H.W. Bush in 1992, serving for one year.

Sinopsis

A bestseller in its original German edition and subsequently translated into more than a dozen languages, Joachim Fest's Hitler as become a classic portrait of a man, a nation, and an era. Fest tells and interprets the extraordinary story of a man's and a nation's rise from impotence to absolute power, as Germany and Hitler, from shared premises, entered into their covenant. He shows Hitler exploiting the resentments of the shaken, post-World War I social order and seeing through all that was hollow behind the appearance of power, at home and abroad. Fest reveals the singularly penetrating politician, hypnotizing Germans and outsiders alike with the scope of his projects and the theatricality of their presentation. Fest also, perhaps most importantly, brilliantly uncovers the destructive personality who aimed at and achieved devastation on an unprecedented scale. As history and as biography, this is a towering achievement, a compelling story told in a way only a German could tell it, "dispassionately, but from the inside." (Time)
