Stamped leather spine label. iv, [1], 6-252 pp. Frontispiece engraving by Amos Doolittle depicting a man with quill and books pointing toward a buzzing bee hive with caption "From the Hive he cull'd the Sweets." Contemporary owner signature (Noah Bennet) on front free endpaper. Sabin 32278, Evans 28841. First published in England in 1791, this literary collection groups aphorisms, poetry, and short bits of prose culled from numerous unnamed writers according to subject, such as Anger, Envy, Conversation, Nobility, Music, Love of our Neighbour, and Honesty, among others. The book's publisher Isaiah Thomas was also a bookseller, newspaper publisher, Revolutionary War activist, and founder of the American Antiquarian Society. Title continued: Selected from the writings of near one hundred of the best and most approved authors of different nations; but chiefly from the most celebrated English writers, who have been esteemed the most correct and elegant models of fine composition; intended as a repository of sententious, ingenious, and pertinent sayings. In verse and prose, to which youth may have recourse upon any particular topic; and by which they may be taught to think justly, write correctly and elegantly, and speak with propriety. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
