New York: Henry Holt, 1940. Stated First Edition from this Medford, Massachusetts author. From inside jacket flap "The poems in this volume were awarded the 1939 Poetry Prize in the Avery and Jule Hopwood Awards at the University of Michigan...Mr. Ciardi's verse is strong, young and it rings true..." 62 pages to this owner-augmented volume. Rear endpage and inside back cover have copies of John Ciardi poems clipped from the New Yorker magazine in 1944: "On Sending Home My Civilian Clothes" and "Song" and 1946's "Chelsea Naval Hospital" and affixed with cello tape which has darkened. Also tucked into book is a photocopy of Ciardi's poem The Gift (about Holocaust survivor poet Josef Stein.) Name on fep. Jacket has edgewear, very sunned spine, chips around top and some red transfer to back of jacket. There is a stain to top half of outside pages which is on the very far margin of some pages, some of this rubs off and may be dust.
