London: Baldwin and Cradock, 1831. [Hippology] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (23 x 14cm), pp.viii; 472. Numerous in-text engravings. Brown half-calf, borders blind-tooled. Marbled paper over boards. Black label containing gilt titles, as well as gilt embellishment, to spine. Edges speckled brown. Some spotting/soiling to interior and endpapers. Previous ownership inscription in black ink to title page, dated to the 1830s. Light rubbing to boards, some discolouration and scuffing to calf. Wear to spine, joints, and board extremities. Very good. A product of the partnership between the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge and William Youatt, accomplished veterinarian and animal researcher whose influence reached Darwin. The SDUK (1826-1848) was a project implemented by Whig politician Henry Brougham to publish cheap educational texts for the working/middle class reader. This book comes from their Farmers Series, and covers the horse's general history, anatomy, behavioural instincts, and proper management.
