He became involved in politics in the 1930s and served as the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1938 to 1940. He was a prominent supporter of his son John F. Kennedy's political career and helped him to secure the Democratic nomination for President in 1960. Despite his success, Kennedy was a controversial figure who was often criticized for his business practices and political views.
