New York: George Braziller. Very Good. [c.1966]. Hardcover. A reproduction of the illuminated manuscript of Catherine of Cleves (1417-1479), Duchess of Guelders in present-day Germany. A book of hours is a devotional work dating to the middle ages and consisting of one-of-a-kind painted religious scenes, "illuminated" with gold leaf or similar precious metal such as silver. The original now belongs to the Guennol Collection and The Pierpont Morgan Library in Manhattan. This striking reproductions with numerous color plates. John Plummer has provided commentaries alongside each plate, as well as an introduction and considerable detailed information at appendices. --- In vellum-look paper-covered boards with gilt-stamped family crest to front cover; gilt-stamped spine titling. The plates are printed on heavy gloss paper. Volume wrapped in black paper-covered slipcase with a reproduction of one of the plates to one panel and titling on the other. --- A torn part of spine covering has been carefully reattached to spine prior to this listing leaving a visible crack, with previous owner's embossed circular stamp to title page and small tears to paper along front joint; otherwise volume is undamaged. Slipcase with minor soiling, remains structurally sound.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; 359 pages .
