Boston: Home Market Club, 1888. First edition thus. Good. Single sheet, 18'' x 9'' approx. Four horizontal folds, top segment completely but cleanly detached, small tears starting to other folds. Mild edgewear and toning. Good only.
Speech of Republican Representative (later Senator) Henry Cabot Lodge to the House Ways and Means Committee, followed by debate. Reprinted from the Congressional Record of June 30, 1888, by the protectionist Home Market Club of Boston, an organization formed that same year. Lodge reads a claim concerning alleged bribes and factory infiltration attempts by Chinese rattan furniture manufacturers, and argues against measures "simply benefit[ting] the Chinese, a people whom we have excluded from our shores, whose labor we do not propose to admit here, but which it is now proposed to admit in the concrete form of a manufactured article." Rare piece of anti-Chinese ephemera, not included in Cowan's bibliography and not found in OCLC.
