"The decision to implement the Kariba Scheme Dam Project was commenced in August 1955; and the Gwembe Tonga who lived in the area of inundation, had to be removed and resettled by the middle of 1959. The Gwembe, or Valley, Tonga are a people who had for the most part remained aloof from the changing world. Thsy had largely rejected the economc and material advancement which had so greatly changed their neighbours, and had retained more fully than any trib in Northern or Southern Rhodesia a pre-European way of life. It was therefore considered of importance that a record of their customs should be made before thsy were uprooted. Of particular importance is the chapter on the 'Shades', a seminal study for students of African beliefs, while every specialist in agriculture, land tenure, law or administration will find material of value." from the jacket flap. Not Price Clipped. Pristine fold-out map. Two small closed tears to spine edge dj with only the faintest wear to fore-edge corner tips, and faded spine of same.
