Clean pages with noticeable tanning and foxing throughout. Tightly bound with faint thumb marking throughout. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Moderate peeling to spine and corners. Gilt lettering is bright and clear. Visible wear marks to boards.

The text is illustrated with numerous black-and-white illustrations (307) of which 21 are full-page. Blue coloured textured cloth covered boards with gilt illustration to the front panel and gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. A carefully revised second edition of a work that was first published in circa 1870, ( this preface is dated January 1873). An early book on birds and reptiles and their common ancestry and how they diverged using the radical theory put forth by Charles Darwin. Binding remains firm. Crinkling to pages at gutters. Pages are moderately tanned throughout. Thumb marking present. Occasional foxing. Hinges are cracked with netting exposed. Boards have mild edge wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. There is bumping to corners and crushing to spine ends. Tanning to spine and edges. Gilt lettering is darkened. Book has a slight forward lean.
