Hydraulic Mining Lynx Creek, Arizona

Prescott, Arizona: Erwin Baer. Good. Boudoir Card. Boudoir card has photographer's imprint on verso and title written in ink on verso. No date but likely late 1880s-1890s. Photo measures 7" x 4"; card measures 8 ½" x 5". Moderate foxing, toning and soiling to card; moderate foxing and yellowing to photo. This photo depicts four or five men hydraulic mining in Lynx Creek, Arizona. Hydraulic mining dramatically increased the effectiveness placer mining, and in this image you can see why. Pressurized water jets from a nozzle and four men work the large sluices. Long pipes, carrying water to the mining site, can be seen on the hillside above where the miners are working. Hydraulic mining in Lynx Creek began in 1868 and continued to be successful enterprise into the 1890s. German-born photographer Erwin Baer worked out of Prescott from the early 1880s to 1910s, where he was primarily known as a mine photographer. .
