BOSTON: Little, Brown and Company, 1890 BEAUTIFUL DARK GREEN BOOK, NICE RAISED DESIGN ON COVER AND SPINE, GOLD PRINT FRONT AND SPINE, SLIGHT RIGHT LOWER CORNER BUMP, UPPER EDGE OF PAGES HAVE GOLD COATING. COUPLE INK DOTS VERY FRONT AND BACK INSIDE NO OTHER MARKINGS INSIDE. NICE AND TIGHT, VERY GOOD SHAPE. NO DATE, ESTIMATE CIRCA 1890'S. Kingsley, Charles, 1819-75, English author and clergyman. Ordained in 1842, he became vicar of Eversley in Hampshire in 1844. From 1848 to 1852 he published tracts advocating Christian socialism. These views were embodied in his first two novels, Alton Locke (1850) and Yeast (1851), both of which deal with contemporary social problems. In his subsequent novels, including Hypatia (1853), Westward Ho! (1855), and Hereward the Wake (1866), he used historical settings to communicate his ideas. Hypatia is an 1853 novel by the English writer Charles Kingsley. It is a fictionalized account of the life of the philosopher Hypatia.(Hypatia was a Greek philosopher and the daughter of another philosopher, Theon of Alexandria, who taught her mathematics. About 400 ce she became head of the Platonist school at Alexandria, where she lectured on the philosophy known as Neoplatonism.) It is perceived as an anti-Catholic work. The novel is referred to in the 1971 novel Ancient History. ANTIQUE BOOKS DEN, WHERE HISTORY LIVES.
