Louis Birk, managing editor of Modern Age Books, had urged the author, Granville Hicks (1901-1982), to write a book presenting to middle-class America "the official line of the Communist Party in the Popular Front period." During the 1930s, Hicks was an influential Marxist literary critic; he became editor of the Communist Party's cultural magazine, The New Masses, in 1934. In 1939, however, he resigned from the party in response to the Nazi-Soviet non-aggression pact. Book is in Good Condition: cover is rubbed and lightly soiled; loss at lower end of back joint; lower corner of front cover creased; first page (before title page) stained, with chip at upper corner; otherwise, clean and tight.
