New York: William and Morrow Company, 1939. Fine. Signed limited first edition, one of 500 numbered copies signed by E-yeh-Shure', who was only 13 when the book was published. Louise Abeita, also known as E-yeh-Shure', was a member of the Isleta Pueblo community. Her father was so impressed by his young daughter's poetry that he arranged to published it as part of the National Gallery of the American Indian he cofounded. Illustrated by Indigenous artists under the sponsorship of the NGAI with E-yeh-Shure's text, it was "a cooperative endeavor to make a truly Indian book" (preface) that scholar Joyce Ann Kievit calls "the first truly Indian book." More picture books featuring both Indigenous authors and illustrators would not appear through major publishing houses until the 1960s. 9'' x 12''. Original red cloth, gilt rules and pictorial paste-on. Illustrated by Gerald Nailor, Houser, and ToHoma with 10 beautiful full page color illustrations of Pueblo life. [28] pages. Signed by E-yeh-Shure' on the limitation page.
