1910. Two original watercolor drawing on artists board. I: mat size 500 x 375 mm., [19 ½ x 15 inches] and image size 485 x 320 mm [19 x 12 ½ inches]. II: mat size 500 x 390 mm., [19 x 15 ½ inches] and image size 485 x 360 mm., [19 x 14 inches]. Bright red, green, yellow and blue tones of watercolor highlighted with grey, white and brown. Signed by the Artist in lower margins. Manuscript legend written on lower border of mat I, which reads "Clapped his hands to his bloody face howling with pain and freight." Removed from original matting, card stock with some browning from age in margins, and some shadow of mat. Original art work by the noted book illustrator and artist Frank Merrill for the first edition of W. D. Wattle's Hell Fire Harrison and an untitled watercolor signed. Frank T. Merrill was an artist born in Boston in 1848. He studied art at the Lowell Institute and at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and travel to England and Europe to study the masters. "His water colors are free in wash and color, and he has also been very successful with his etchings. Merrill's work has been used extensively for illustrating" and may be found in editions of Thackery, Irving, and others. Mantle Fielding, Dictionary of American Painters, p. 239. (611) .
