Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1947. 8vo sized cloth bound hardcover with color illustrated dust jacket; 446 bright pages. This is a fictionalized biography / historical fiction of Pennsylvania statesman Thaddeus Stevens. Elsie Singmaster (1879-1958) was known for her juvenile historical fiction and often chose the Civil War as her historical background. Singmaster was awarded a Newbury Honor for her 1934 juvenile historical fiction novel Swords of Steel. Thaddeus Stevens (1792-1868) was a radical Republican of the Civil War/Reconstruction era. Stevens, who served as congressman from Pennsylvania, was a fierce advocate for African American rights, advocating full equality for the former slaves. Even requesting that he be buried in a black cemetery "to illustrate in my death the principles which I advocated through a long life - Equality of Man before his Creator." Stevens also served on the committee which drafted the Articles of Impeachment against President Andrew Johnson (Johnson was acquitted.)
