London: Herbert, 1797. Near Fine. Tall 8vo (slightly over 10 inches tall; 26.5 cm), horizontally grained red calf ca. 1820s, gilt borders and spine decorations, watered silk endpapers with gilt decorated borders, leather turn-ins with lovely gilt decorations, bookplate likely from the Faithful family, late 18th Century, described as "Plain armorial with a passant Talbot [hound] as blazon. The motto is Nec Timeo Nec Sperno - "I neither fear nor desire". Inside the shield are motifs of a cross-flory with lattice patterning, ermine patterning, rampant lions, cross-moline, lion heads, bars, chevron, bendlets, martletts and more." Collated complete with 63 plates including folding plate, lovely copy with minor darkening, contents clean and bright, the majority of the plates also in fine condition. The portraits are terrific, well engraved and filled with character.
