Berlin, Germany, 1936. Single sheet, folded twice. 13.5 x 21 cm. Identification paper for Ilse Straus of Karlsruhe, dated May 25, 1936, for the Training Course for Jewish Teachers and After School Care Givers, or Ausbildungslehrgang für jüdische Kindergärtnerinnen und Hortnerinnen in Berlin, Germany. Signed by then director, Lila Wolff. This training course was set up in response to the 1933 law which dictated that Jews no longer be admitted to non-Jewish schools and seminars. The course was recognized by the state in 1935, which then allowed the course's credentials to be recognized outside of Germany in case of emigration. Ilse Straus was able to leave Germany with her parents and three siblings in 1938, and after a four-month stay in Switzerland, were able to emigrate to the United States. Ilse lived in Berkeley, California until her death in 1999. The director, Lila Wolff, was also able to emigrate, and left Germany in 1938. This identification paper is lightly age-toned, and has been folded twice. The bottom edge has been heavily nicked, with several closed tears approximating 5 mm each. . Unbound. Good.
