From the library of George R.M. Ewing, Jr., with his bookplate designed by Rockwell Kent with the Latin quotation "Homo Sum Humani Nihil A Mi Alienum Esse Puto". This particular bookplate was designed in 1928 and can be found in "The Bookplates & Marks of Rockwell Kent, 1929, #51 126pp. With 64 illustrations by the author, Together with an original pen and ink drawing signed, measuring 18 1/4" x 12 5/8 " which is also found on page 4 and titled "weighing anchor". A very worthwhile collection. bound in green paper over beveled boards lettered in gilt, backed in vellum, spine gilt with only minor toning. A fine bright copy housed in publisher's box with sides broken.

London & New York: Chapman & Hall -- A.C. Armstrong and Son, 1889. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Albert Pepin. TWO VOLUMES First Edition. Mixed publisher set with volume I being the London issue and volume II being the New York issue. Nearly identical light wear pattern to both volumes with exactly the same spine tone, suggests that this was a very early pairing, if not an original pairing by the publishers. The only difference in the London and New York volume is the publisher name stamped to base of spine and the addition of "New York: A.C. Armstrong And Son" printed on the title page below the "London: Chapman And Hall". In fact, the title page of volume II for the New York issue is a cancel (meaning that it was/is a separate sheet that has been glued to a stub at the title page, the UK title page having been excised and replaced with the New York page). 1747 1ed English Condamine Science Voyage Equador South America Amazon Geography

Charles Marie de La Condamine was an 18th-century French explorer who studied the geography. A French-Spanish expedition was sent to South America and the Arctic region in 1735, to determine the size and shape of the earth. The two expeditions proved that the earth is flattened at the Poles. La Condamine, a scientist on the expedition, returned home by crossing Brazil via the Amazon making it
'the first scientific exploration of the Amazon… The greatest geographical event of the eighteenth century as regards South America" (Hill).
"A very useful abridgment of this indispensable work, entirely satisfactory for nearly all purposes" (Goodman).
This first English edition of Condamine's 'Journal,' was officially published as a complete account in 1751 with a supplement in 1752, but the initial French printings of this abridgement were published in 1745 and 1746 with translations soon following.
