First UK edition, first printing (published in the USA a year earlier). 338pp. In green cloth-covered boards, with gilt lettering on spine (boards very slightly rounded on corners and spine ends). Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. In it original dust jacket (a little rubbed at edges, chipped with minor loss at spine ends, some visible shelf wear on rear). Dust jacket now protected in archival quality Mylar wrapper, fitted without the use of tape or adhesives. 12 mo. Goodwin's first novel is a study degeneration where the hero is not so much one of the characters, although they are compelling, but the island of Haiti, brilliantly evoked by the author as he describes his characters' spiritual downfall.
