FIRST EDITION. 4°, recent purple half sheep over faux reptilian boards, (somewhat worn, but sound), top edges rouged, other edges uncut, original tan wrappers (neatly repaired) bound in. Some light browning. Marginal repairs to last four leaves, not affecting text. Map with 3" tear and several short tears at folds, without loss. The work includes chapters on the discovery of the island and its history to 1640; the people, customs, flora and fauna; geology; P. Antonio Vieira, Chateaubriand, P. Jeronymo d'Andrade and the liberal movement; public education including Almeida Garrett; Caldeira da Praia; trade and industry; the coast, mountains, press, philharmonic societies, and the Monte d'Ajuda (one of the island's highest elevations).António Borges do Canto Moniz (Angra do Heroísmo, 1846-1949) was a writer, school teacher, and bureaucrat in the Azores.
