"The work was originally announced in 1843, and was issued in 54 numbers of 25ct each. J.A. Adams, the engraver, is credited with having taken the first electrotype in America from a woodcut. Many illustrations in this Bible are done this way. Artists were engaged for more than six years in the preparation of the designs and engravings included in this Bible, at a cost of over $20,000." (Hills 1161, quoting O'Callaghan) "This Harper publication was a remarkable production for its time and place, and retains its importance in the annals of American book-making. W.J. Linton, noted wood-engraver and author, knew 'no other book like this, so good, so perfect in all its undertakes.' The illustrations are like paintings of history, as are so many of the old European Biblical painting and illustrations" (Hills 1161, quoting Weitenhampf) Please note: This is an oversized or heavy item; additional shipping charges will apply.

Sobre Village Lights Bookstore, ABAA/ILAB

Village Lights opened as a brick-and-mortar shop in November of 2008, a "mom & pop" business, locally owned and independent, with the proprietors, Nathan Montoya and Anne Vestuto, living above the shop. For fifteen years, as a full-service general bookstore, we offered a carefully curated selection of quality used and new books.

In January of 2024, Village Lights transitioned to a rare and antiquarian book shop located on the second floor of our building. We now offer a modest, but growing, eclectic selection of rare, antiquarian, and out-of-print books, with strength in modern firsts and signed copies. We also sell handmade letterpress books and broadsides from Larkspur Press.

We carefully grade our books in accordance with IOBA Book Condition Definitions (https://www.ioba.org/conditions-definitions), describe them using standard ABAA terminology (https://www.abaa.org/glossary), and painstakingly package them to prevent damage in transit. We value direct communication, so please feel free to call if you have questions about our listings or to confirm that an item is still on hand.

We invite you to visit our website or make an appointment to visit us on Main Street in the heart of downtown Madison, Indiana, the country's largest contiguous National Historic Landmark District and a Designated Indiana Cultural District, on the banks of the beautiful Ohio River.
