Sobre este artículo

American Art Galleries, NY, 1919; 8vo, 131 pages; illustrated. Original 1919 auction catalogue for the historic sale of the private Japanese print collection of J.D. Metzgar (1869-1958), distinguished American collector, authority on Japanese color prints, and author of "Adventures in Japanese Prints" (Grabhorn Press,1943). Over 1,200 of Metzgar’s personal prints are listed here for sale, from such masters as Hiroshige, Utamaro, Kuniyoshi, Hokusai, Moronobu, Kiyomasu, Shunsho, Buncho, Harunobu, Yeishi, Shigemasa, Shunyei (including the complete Chushingura series), and many other legendary and early artists. One hundred and eighteen pages of text followed by twenty-three illustration plates at the back containing 98 photos of selected works by Buncho, Shunyei, Yoshinobu, Koruisai, Tamagawa Shuncho, Yeishi, Kiyonaga, Harunobu, Utamaro, Hokusai, Kuniyoshi, Katsuchika Taito, Kunisada, Hiroshige (over 40 of them), and numerous others, each photo identified by lot number. Metzgar’s copy, with occasional penciled marginalia, apparently made at the sale. An Illinois native, Judson D. Metzgar later moved to Los Angeles, taking up residence on Kingsley Drive approximately three blocks down the same street from oil tycoon J. Paul Getty. Metzgar’s name, Kingsley Drive address, and telephone number are written in his cursive hand on the verso of the front wrap, and a small inscription on the recto of the rear wrap by his daughter reads, "Gift of Mary Alice Metzgar, 12/27/ 58." Bound in plain heavy card boards with brown buckram spine, original printed wraps bound in. Very Good. Crisp, bright, no chips, tears, or foxing. Not an ex-library, with no pockets, stamps or any other appurtenances of any kind. A rare item and resource of considerable value to collectors and art historians.
