Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo & Co.. Very Good. 1852. First Edition. Hardcover. Sttel plate engravings; maps & sections, folding; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 4to oversize HC in original blindstamped brown cloth with titles in gilt to upper board. Soundly bound, complete and clean. Unlettered spine is sunned with fading to the brown cloth; cloth crimped and superficially frayed at spine ends. Mild fading to cloth at board edges. This copy was held in a University Library but not accessioned, with a small oval ink stamp to the pastedown and a discreet blind stamp to the edge of the title page the only ownership indications. Illustrated with 27 steel engraved plates largely of fossils, each with a descriptive lettered tissue guard. At rear are 21 maps and sections, most folding and with color added by hand. A few engravings with mild foxing but in general the plates are exceptionally bright, crisp and clean. Maps and sections are in very neat condition also, with a few flaws as noted: the very long fold-out section of "Rocks Exposed" has an extra accordion fold & The large folding section of the Des Moine River between Raccoon and Lizard Forks has had one fold starting at front edge with browning and weakness on that fold that we have archivally mended with japanese kozo paper tape. A little used and very clean copy with some toning to the cloth but overall VG or better. [Sabin 58009] ... Oversize book may require additional charges for expedited or international shipping. .
