"Most authors have agreed in extolling the ingenuity, learning, and merit of Meursius: he excelled particularly in the knowledge of Greek language and antiquities; and applied himself with such indefatigable pains to correct, explain, translate, and publish many works of the ancients..." [Chalmers]. Meursius published this biographical work anonymously. It is an important source for the biographies of the major Dutch scholars of Scaliger's time and is illustrated with a fine series of engraved portraits. Simoni, BL 17th Low Countries, M101. STCN 161304 (diff. Collation). Willems 237n. Scarce. Joannes Meursius (1579-1639) became professor at Leiden in 1610, and was an important historian and author of several books. The present work gives the biographies, and occasionally brief bibliographical data, as well as the finely engraved portraits of the professors who lectured at the Leiden Academy during its first 35 years or so. 24 portraits, and 2 others -Hadrianus Junius; Justus Lipsius; Ee-mbertus Dodonaeus; Franciscus Juniius; Joseph Scaliger; Petrus Molinaeus; Joaunes Meursins; Sugo Grotius; Pctrus Scriverius, etc. 8.5" x 6.75". Contemporary full vellum ruled in blind. First leaf of Hugo Grotius biography is supplied in contemporary penned facsimile.
