Hardcover is half-bound in tan leather with blue-green, cream, and gold marbled paper-covered boards. Spine has five raised bands; four spine panels have gilt floral device. The other two panels have dark brown leather labels with gilt lettering: Upper label title: Geo. Eliot's Works, lower label title: Theo. Such Essays & Poems. Top page edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Tissued frontispiece; 21 additional black and white plates. Binding tight. Front hinge has very light partial crack. Leather is in good condition, with some crackle and rubbing to edges and corners; partial loss of leather surface at the top eighth inch of the spine. Bottom back corner missing leather at very tip; board exposed. Pages lightly and uniformly tanned but still supple. Pages clean and unmarked. Sections paginated separately: Theophrastus Such: 166 pages; Essays and Leaves from a Note-Book: 223 pages; Poetical Works: 400 pages. Title page has series name "Burt's Library of the World's Best Books" in a small illustrated medallion. No dust jacket. See our listings for other George Eliot volumes with matching bindings.
