Signed and numbered by the artist. Lise Melhorn-Boe: "Counterpanes is a meander book that opens out to resemble a quilt, with nine-patch squares. These fabric books were screen-printed in an eccentric edition of 10
using up drawers-full of quilting fabric scraps. For the edition of 10, I cut over 900 4.5" squares. There is one book in reds, and there are four in oranges, three in purples and two in greens." Four of the middle patches in four of the panels contain a poem by Hazel Hall. "Hazel Hall lived in Portland, Oregon, in the early 20th century. She was confined to the upper floor of her family home, where she took in sewing to augment the family's income, and wrote poetry. At least 35 of her poems are directly about sewing; many others use…

Cairo, Egypt:: Islam Aly,, 2019.. Edition of 30. 4.5" diameter x 3.5" thick; thirty sections with four folios. 2" diameter x 0.75" miniature accordion books. Materials: laser-cut Fabriano and tracing paper, plexiglass mirror, laser-engraved wooden boards. Coptic binding with leather wrappings connected to seven miniature circular books. Inkjet printed text in English and Arabic. Signed, numbered, and dated by the artist. Islam Aly: "'Inception' is inspired by stories and journeys of the immigrants and refugees. It is a bilingual codex in English and Arabic. The book is based on the twelfth-century Persian verse poem 'The Conference of the Birds' written by Farid Aldin Al-Attar. The poem is about the search for truth and integrity, which is parallel to the immigrants and refugee's quest to re-discover themselves. "Birds meet to begin searching for their perfect king. But to find him, they need to start a difficult journey. The birds show their doubts and fears to their leader, the hoopoe. He encouraged and supported the birds to be confident, grateful, and honest. The birds start a wondrous journey that only 30 of them completes, and they eventually recognize that their king is each of them and all of them. "The English text is adapted from Afkham Darbandi translation. The Arabic text is adapted from Badee Mohamed Gomaa Arabic translation 'Manteq Al Tayr'. The bird images represented are from medieval Islamic artwork. Arabic Calligraphy is done by Abdul Karim and Sabri. "'Inception' was made as part of Swarthmore College's Friends, Peace, and Sanctuary project. Major support for Friends, Peace, and Sanctuary has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage with additional support from Swarthmore College Libraries, the Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility, the William J. Cooper Foundation, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

San Francisco, California:: Insiya Dhatt,, 2019.. Edition of 5. 8.5 x 8.5". Accordion structure. Eight laser-cut images. Materials: Museum Board, Arches Text Wove. Inkjet printed. Signed and numbered by the artist. Insiya Dhatt: "'Illusions' examines the reality or elusiveness of basic qualities of life. By obscuring desirable qualities of life and placing them opposite optical illusions, 'Illusions' demonstrates the varying internal and external views of one's foundational needs. From a distance, the book can be viewed as visually stimulating yet closer up the picture is more nuanced. "'Illusions' is an accordion book with eight laser-cut optical illusions with a single word opposite each optical illusion. These words and images question the availability of so-called expected qualities of life. In my own life, I created the illusion of strength for my family in my home country while I struggled internally in my life in the West.

Housed in 10 x 10 x 2.5" black cloth-covered box. The latest in Goodale's Threatened and Endangered Species series concerns the New England Cottontail. In 2007, the state of Maine added the New England Cottontail to its Endangered Species List. Goodale lists loss of contiguous habitat, highway deaths, and pollution as three major reasons for their decline. Rebecca Goodale: "It is a circle book, a little like an Alexander Calder mobile, discs that are printed 2 sided with imagery about a rare rabbit and all of its struggles with the human altered environment. Docherty, Catalog of the Exhibition, Catalog of the Exhibition: Threatened and Endangered: Artists' Books Created by Rebecca Goodale, 2004:"Because human encroachment on nature more often takes place incrementally, the damage may be done before the consequences are clear. Goodale's Northern Blazing Star anticipates a future in which species survival depends on artificial recreation of natural patterns. This star book focuses on Maine's last grassland, the Kennebunk Plains, home to the grasshopper sparrow, upland sandpiper, black racer, and Northern blazing star. The latter, a rare plant pollinated by yellow butterflies, depends on fire to preserve the character of its habitat. Under normal conditions, lightning would kindle the necessary fire, but the…

Portland, Maine:: Rebecca Goodale,, 2012.. Edition of 3. 6 x 6"; 18 unnumbered pages. Handmade paper folded into 5 French-folded signatures sewn onto two straps. Handcolored collagraphs and velvet flowers tell the wordless story. Banded with button and thread closure. Rebecca Goodale has been documenting the extinct and endangered flora and fauna of Maine since 1999. Her books in this area, as Nicholas Schroeder said in a review of her exhibition Lullaby, "vivify, celebrate, and elaborate them, often with poetic flourishes, rich metaphor, and abundance of color. Their surfaces mirror her subjects' habitats, and the rhythm of their bindings borrows from their intricate and animate patterns." Once in a while she diverts from the specific theme of extinct and endangered to produce a playful book still with the theme of flora and fauna. Bird, String, Cricket is such a book. It is a playful book with bright colors and velvet flowers a bird, a string, and a cricket.

Austin: Texas Writers Project, 2000. Original . Broadside. FINE. 24 x 36 inches, printed on high quality coated stock with metalic ink. Shipped- rolled in heavy tube. This fabulous poster was created especially for the featured author of Texas Writers Month in 2000 held in Austin, Texas by graphic designer Marc English. It is printed on heavy high quality coated stock in metalic inks: silver and bronze and laid over a duotone photograph of the rugged Big Bend country of West Texas. The poster quotes a long scene from McCarthy's BLOOD MERIDIAN with drops of bronze red blood for emphasis. This is a stunning visual and carries the impact of the original text depicting a scene of horror as the savages line up on horseback along the ridge their glass beads and painted bodies caught forever in the sun's hot glare as they anticipate the massacre that would follow. Only McCarthy could make this scene so vivid you might have to put the book down and never finish it.
