Auburn and Buffalo, NY.: John E. Beardsley.. First Edition.. 1857.. Illustrated with crude wood engravings, 9 x 6 inches, 544 pp plus 8 pp adverts, embossed covers and spine (all now detached); missing front free endpaper; colored frontispiece. Pages marked by time-toning or light foxing. Name plate to front paste-down. Text block intact and tight. The volume contains over 45 narratives described in a headline at the outset as "Perilous Adventures and Thrilling Incidents of Travellers." Many of the titles of these short narratives appear designed to keep people from leaving wherever they are, no matter how dreary it may be, as the world is a wicked and dangerous place: "An Earthquake Adventure in Italy"; "Terrible Shipwreck at the Cape of Good Hope"; "Encounter With Robbers in Turkey"; "Singular Encounter with a Cobra di Capello" Etc. Other short tales report on newly settled regions in western America: "Adventures in Oregon" with illustration of Astoria; "Adventures in California" with illustration of gold washing; "Adventures in the Upper Missouri" with illustration of Mandan Village; "Notes of a Traveller in Texas" with illustration of the Alamo. Several entries on Canada, with "Roughing it in Canada," "The Indians of Canada,""Adventures of Captain Head in Canada." A useful soporific for the drowsy reader. .
