The covers are edgeworn, wrinkled and rubbed, the front and rear endpapers are toned, and there is a previous owner's name in ink on the front free endpaper. "A Lieutenant of Cavalry rode west along the Oregon Trail at the head of a detachment carrying mail. He was only twenty-one and could not help but glance down proudly at his new uniform. On its shoulderstraps first lieutenant's bars, given him back at Fort Laramie a few days ago, glistened under the Wyoming sun which gleamed as brightly on the saber scabbard hanging against the yellow stripe along his blue breeches.
