Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler & Co. 7 issues bound in 2 volumes. Half green calf and green cloth boards, flat back with gilt rules, gilt title direct to spine. VOLUME 1: containing the first 4 volumes of the Indian Railway Library (IRL). The covers were designed at the Mayo School of Art, Lahore, where Kipling's father, J. Lockwood Kipling, was the Director. On the covers of each volume, at the head, will be found the signature of E.W.M. Norie, Colonel and Adjutant of George V of Britain (1862-1915). Col. Norie was born in India to English Parents, was sent to a boarding school in Edinburgh and later completed a military education in England. He is mentioned as part of the personal staff of Major-General Sir Bindon Blood in Churchill's The Story of the Malakand Field Force "Captain E.W.M. Norie, Superintendent, Army Signalling (Middlesex Regiment)." Norie is also the author of a book on Military Operations in China 1900-1901, published in 1903, where Norie participated as a Captain in the international military coalition, which was assigned to fighting the Chinese insurgents during the Boxer Rebellion. Along with his signature at the head of each cover is his name printed in black ink artfully blending in with the cover art and print. Indian Railway Library (IRL) No. 1.
