Dwyer" Francis Xavier Dwyer was co-author of a widely used textbook: "Introduction to the Study of Law," by Edmund M. Morgan and Francis X. Dwyer, and was a librarian at the Law Library of Harvard University and later for decades at the Law Library of Library of Congress. Franciscus de Victoria (1483-1546) was a Spanish Renaissance Roman Catholic philosopher, theologian and jurist, founder of the philosophical School of Salamanca, and dubbed by some as the "father of international law" for his contributions to the theory of just war and international law. Elected to the Prime Chair of theology at the University of Salamanca, Francicus promoted Thomism (the philosophy and theology of St. Thomas Aquinas) until 1546. He renewed the methods of theology and natural law and encourage the Spanish monarch to limit the power exerted over the aborigines in the New World. He published nothing during his life, his work survived through notes taken by his students which greatly influenced the Dutch legal philosopher, Hugo Grotius. Contents: Part 1:Introduction by Ernest Nys, and Translation of the introduction (by John Pawley Bate); Part II: A translation of the text by John Pawley Bate; Part III: Revised Text by Herbert Francis Wright, with Preferatory Remarks, List of Errata, and Index of Authors Cited; Part IV: A Photographic Facsimile Reproduction of J. G. Simon's Edition of 1696. The text includes On the Indians Lately Discovered and The Law of War on Indians. .

At The Antiquarian Book Shop, located in Georgetown - an historic neighborhood of Washington, D.C. we have been buying, selling & appraising rare, interesting and scholarly books in Georgetown for more than 30 years. Over those many years we have taken great pleasure from satisfying our customers' eclectic literary requirements in the shop and hope to continue in that tradition now that we have moved our operation on-line.Currently, our catalogued inventory includes about 4,000 books from the sixteenth century through the twentieth century in a variety of subject areas. Our stock comprises antiquarian books, collectible books and scholarly books, as well as a selection of antique prints and ephemera.The books listed here represent only a small portion of our total inventory. We are in the process of cataloguing the extensive holdings in our warehouse (15,000+ books) and hope to flesh out these pages over the months to come. Our new format allows us to expand & update our listings frequently. We have included images of many items listed to better convey their quality and condition.
