He is known for his appearances at Defcon as the host of the popular game Hacker Jeopardy, and for his provocative and original ideas and has written more than a dozen works on security topics. In 2002, he was honored as a "Power Thinker" and one of the 50 most powerful people in networking by Network World. In 2008, he was voted one of the 25 Most Influential People in the Security Industry by Security Magazine. His first non-fiction book, Information Warfare: Chaos on the Electronic Superhighway (1994, 1996, 1997) introduces the concepts of cyberterrorism to the public. Another of his books, "Cybershock" (2000, 2001), is a non-technical look at the DEF CON conference, hackers in general, Phreaking and the importance of computer security. He wrote Time Based Security, outlining how to use time as a security metric. Pearl Harbor Dot Com is a novel about a terrorist cyberattack on the United States. In 2001, Winn was labeled one of the Network World major "Power Thinkers" by Network World. In 2007, SC Magazine labeled him one of the Top 5 Security Thinkers. He has been called the "civilian architect of information warfare" and has been identified as one of the 25 most influential people in the security industry. Schwartau is the author of Internet and Computer Ethics for Kids (and Parents and Teachers Without a Clue) (2001/2002). Dr. Fred Cohen described this book as "The best security book ever written". His first non-fiction book, "Information Warfare: Chaos on the Electronic Superhighway"(1993, 1994, 1996, 1997) developed the concepts and taxonomies of Information Warfare and Cyberterrorism. That book brought previously classified ideas into the public domain. He called for the creation of a National Information Policy, a Constitution in Cyberspace and an Electronic Bill of Rights. The sequel, "Information Warfare: Cyberterrorism, Second Edition," was released in hard cover then paperback in 1997/1998. Contributors cited in this second seminal work included John Deutch, Director of the CIAAs the National Information Infrastructure grows and evolves into everyman's electronic superhighway, are we opening the doors to an electronic cold war? Or are we on the edge of a brave new precipice overlooking the dawn of the information revolution? With over 125,000,000 computers inextricably tying our economy together through complex land and satellite-based communications systems, a major portion of our domestic 6 trillion dollar economy depends on their consistent and reliable operation. In a serious and inviting manner, Information Warfare: Chaos on the Electronic Superhighway examines the awesome potential for industrial and international espionage. Through sabotage, theft, data manipulation, and other means, our economy could be crippled beyond anything in recent history. Currently within the banking community it is common practice for banks to use creative accounting to hide millions of dollars lost every year through Information Warfare. In Information Warfare the "digital persona" plays the role of victim and perpetrator. The wrong hands could extract the most personal information about the "digital you," not the least of which could be medical, financial, business, legal, and criminal documentation. An individual could alter his/her own records to eradicate nefarious histories. Or an individual could alter anyone's electronic documentation for any reason. Information Warfare outlines almost every kind of informational disaster imaginable leaving the reader to think there may be no way out of the quagmire that is the new information age. However, author Winn Schwartau details current trends in Information Warfare and inspires the dialogue necessary to establish a National Information Policy, a constitution for Cyberspace and an Electronic Bill of Rights.
