Folio. 33 cm. [12], 578, [58] pp. Large printer's mark on t.p.; woodcut initials and headpieces. Old panelled calf, rebacked, with corners somewhat worn. Still a handsome and very good copy overall. Ink ownerships of the British novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) on front pastedown and one of his ancestor's, T. Thackeray (probably Thomas Thackeray, 1736-1806, a surgeon at Cambridge), at head of title-page. (Adams H-611).

Full vellum with titles inked to spines. 6 raised bands. Red speckled edges. Fissure in vellum at front hinges, but quite firm. Wine colored stain to front cover of vol. II near spine. Many foldout plates. Late 17th century compilation of medical specialties. Large thick folio, title page, dedication page, preface two pages, author's tributes ten pages, then (ii), 1734 (but actually slightly less as there are several errors of pagination), illustrated with over 2,100 woodcut figures, lacking the extra engraved title page, the 20-page addenda at the rear and the errata leaf, but otherwise complete and very sound. The contents are extremely clean and tight, there is the odd crease and an occasional tiny corner missing but overall in impressive condition. The front and rear endpapers are a little browned and marked, both front and rear hinges are cracked and showing a little silver-fish damage but there is no weakness at all. Full panelled calf, probably eighteenth century but possibly earlier, a little rubbed, a little worn at the edges, scuffed on the upper cover, rebacked fairly recently with a leather spine and red morocco label. Index in Latin (missing A to D, starts with Eruum), Italian, French, Spanish and German.Perhaps a later pirate copy of Adam Lonicer's Herbarum, arborum, fruticum, frumentorum ac leguminum, Egenolph, Frankfurt, 1546. Lonicer (1528-1586) married printer Christian Egenolph's daughter and became a partner in the firm. With one illustration, depicting the ways to reduce wrinkles on a face. Well preserved. The very rare first printing of this pioneering work of plastic surgery - one of the very first - most likely THE first - publication on face lifting, consisting mainly in the elevating and redraping of the facial skin. The first facelift was reportedly done in either 1901 or 1907, but "[n]ot all writers of rhytidectomy spread their innovations through publication; some were teachers instead of writers.
