First Edition. Jay, judge and moral reformer, was a vigorous advocate of emancipation. He was instrumental in establishing the New York City Anti-Slavery Society and It was largely through his persuasive arguments that a National Anti-Slavery Convention in Philadelphia "inaugurated a country-wide campaign that was based on strictly consitutional grounds." (DAB) He also opposed plans to establish former slave colonies in Africa. The work includes discussion of emancipation in the West Indies. Sabin 35857.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fair.
