New Market, Virginia: New Market Battlefield Military Museum, 1994, xix, 281p, 10 pages of publisher's ads, 122 plates. Copy of the reprint of the New York, Van Nostrand edition of 1864. Fine, bright copy in bright red cloth, gilt lettering. $17.50 Box 2022
One of the authors, William Farquhar Barry (August 18, 1818 – July 18, 1879) was born in New York City and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1838. He took part in the Mexican–American, Seminole, and the Kansas-Missouri Border Wars. He was very active as an artillery officer in the Civil War, from Bull Run until the end of the war. Barry was in command of the northern frontier during the Fenian raids of 1866.
Note: There are a number of works translated from the French in the military books offered by Van Nostrand. Another book on engineering is by J. C. Duane, not related to William Duane, but a West Point graduate and the grandson of an Irish immigrant. One wonders about the influence of Dennis Hart Mahan here.
