Printed by W.W. for Humphrey Moseley, London, 1650. Second Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good+ Condition. Book ESTC Citation R202463; Wing (2nd ed.), H-3081; Thomason, E.1374[2]. 140 p. (Illustrated title, title, portrait of Prince Charles). James Howell (c.1594-1666) was an author of political and historical works who traveled widely in Europe and produced this book, which is often described as the first continental handbook for travelers. The full title is: "Instructions and Directions For Forren Travell. Shewing by what cours, and in what compas of time, one may take an exact Survey of the Kingdomes, and States of Christendome, and arrive to the practicall knowledge of the Languages, to good purpose. With a new Appendix for Travelling into Turkey and the Levant parts." The appendix (pp. 129-140) draws heavily from Sir Henry Blount's account of his trip in 1634-36. It describes ways of getting to Constantinople, touches briefly on travel to Egypt and compares and contrasts Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Of the later Howell writes, "Now 'tis thought that this Religion is like to be of long continuance, because there is no nation where the Church man is more powerful and of greater esteem, in regard that all their Judges and Ecclesiastiques, and so have power o'er the body [and] soule" (p. 135). An early book sale entry for the book clipped from a catalog is laid into the book Size: 5"-6" - Vigesimo-quarto (24mo). 140 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is tight and only slightly toned. The title page is supplemented by an additional facing title page, engraved and signed by W[enceslaus] Hollar. There is also a portrait of Prince Charles. Someone along the way has underlined some words or short phrases in red ink on 19 or 20 pages. This copy is missing the four leaves of advertisements at the end that are reported in the copy at Yale's library. Bound in conemporary sheep, neatly rebacked with the title "Howell on Forren Travell" in gilt on a red morocco panel, along with the year 1650 at the foot of the spine. There is shelf wear around the edges, with the board peeking out of the bottom corner of the front cover and the top corner rounded off. No foxing in this copy. A previous bookseller has written some notes on the front end papers in pencil. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. London: London: printed for J. Nourse, at the Lamb, opposite Katherine-Street, in the Strand, 1746. 1st Edition . Full leather. Very Good. First edition, octavo; xvi,232pp, with full complement of 34 engravings, 33 of which are folding. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. An attractive first edition example of his first work. Laurence Sterne possessed the text in second edition, with possible influence on Uncle Toby and Corporal Trim's obsessions with fortification in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy. This copy exhibits the reading 'agi-' at the end of line 11 on B2r indicative of the form with some of the errata corrected, and 3E2 blank, rather than bearing errata. Lancelot Andrewes was an English clergyman and scholar, who held high positions in the Church of England during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. He was in turn Bishop of Chichester, Ely and Winchester, and oversaw the translation of the Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible. His Tortura Torti - a learned work which grew out of the Gunpowder Plot controversy - was written in answer to Roberto Bellarmino's Matthaeus Tortus which had criticized James I's oath of allegiance. Tortura Torti is one of the Bishop's most substantial controversial works, in which he "refuted papal supremacy and the pope's power to dispense Catholics from moral and civil laws, and defended the king's supremacy over the Church of England. One of the views intruded into the…

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company…, [1915]. First American Edition of this gripping account of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-14 led by Sir Douglas Mawson to King George V Land and Adelie Land, the almost entirely unexplored section of the Antarctic continent immediately south of Australia. In addition to carrying out geographical exploration and scientific studies, the expedition was to visit the South Magnetic Pole. On one excursion in 1912 Mawson lost one of his two companions, Ninnis, down a crevice together with six of their best dogs, most of their food rations, and some of their best supplies. Forced to use their remaining dogs as food, they began to suffer from symptoms brought on by ingesting husky liver containing extremely high levels of Vitamin A. Mertz finally succumbed following bouts of irrationality and raging. Mawson managed escape being swallowed up by a crevice himself and made it back to their base alone just a few hours after their ship had left. He and six…

1908 1st ed Winston Churchill Big Game Hunting My African Journey Illustrated "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts."
― Winston S. Churchill
Acknowledging all Churchill's other accolades, we tend to overlook his claims as a writer of travel. A fine example is at hand in 'My African Journey', the story of his 1908 excursion in Kenya and Uganda.
'My African Journey' is notable for being the only book of his to have photographs possibly taken by the author. Churchill profited from his trip by serializing articles in The Strand Magazine and publishing a book. Hodder and Stoughton published 'My African Journey' in 1908, which added significantly more content than was in the serialized articles.

Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
