(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5373) First edition.

Colored postcard sent by post with 6 handwritten signatures of some participants in the tournament in Baden – Baden 1925 as well as handwritten text signed by v. Karel Treybal on the back. (3 1/2" x 5 1/2"). A short text written by hand in Czech and signature of Czech chess champion Karel Treybal (1885 – 1941) to Milos Hrbas. The front shows a reproduction with a view of the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden with the square in front of it, based on an original by H. Hoffmann. Card from the art publisher Edm. v. Koenig, Heidelberg.

If there is one event which fully characterizes the color and excitement of the palmy days of Hypermodern Chess - then this must be the Baden Baden tournament of 1925. Despite the absence of the past, present and future world champions, Lasker, Capablanca and Euwe, most of the world's chess elite accepted Dr Tarrasch's invitation to take part in the competition which would surpass even those tournaments of Germany's golden pre-War period. So many different countries were represented that the Baden Baden contest was dubbed "The Championship of Europe", while, in addition, America also sent its best players. No wonder the ambitious Alekhine, as a consequence, was inspired to write what proved to be the longest openings survey of his life! Indeed, Baden Baden was of great historical significance in that it was Alekhine's first outright win in a really great tournament. His dazzling play prompted Tartakover to make his famous declaration: "Capalbanca is world champion, Dr Lasker was world champion, but Alekhine plays the way a world champion should play!" Two years later, Alexander Alekhine became world champion. Only one month after the completion of the tournament, the well-known chess publisher of those days, Bernhard Kagan, brought out a book with all the games.

Condition:

Light extremity wear, some damp rippling to heal edges else a good to very good copy. Postcard is age toned, shows signs of wear and has two tears and a crease on the left edge. Rare chess historical collector's item.

First published in French (Paris) in 1775 as Traite Theorique et Pratique du Jeu des Eches. From the library of Borje Borjesson. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 414) First German edition.
Le Traite des Amateurs is a chess treatise composed, by a "Society of Amateurs" contemporaries of Philidor; who all frequented the Cafe de la Regence, in Paris. Of these, the strongest players were Bernard, Carlier, Leger, and Verdoni. Philidor, constantly resident in London, took no part in writing the "Traite des Amateurs;" which in fact embodies many criticisms and comments upon his earlier printed book. Only four masters of the group, considered the strongest, are known: Bernard, Carlier, Leger and Verdoni. A part, partially, from Verdoni, who is the only one of the Amateurs with his own entry in the Oxford Companion to Chess, not very much is… Leer más

Provenance Glasgow Chess Club (Betts: 7-36) Limited to 500 copies. First edition. The London 1899 chess tournament was without a doubt one of the very strongest tournaments ever held on British soil. Almost every great master of the day was present including the past and reigning world champions. It proved to be the swan song of the old champion Wilhelm Steinitz but for Emanuel Lasker it was a glittering success which propelled him way beyond the other grandmasters of the time.
All important players were invited. Many of these players were the champions of the country that they represented. Refusals came from Siegbert Tarrasch and Rudolf Charousek (illness). The businessman Amos Burn had to withdraw at the opening's day. Fifteen participants played double rounds from 30 May to 10 July 1899, except for Richard Teichmann. He… Leer más

Calabria had already produced such players as Leonardo di Bono and Michele di Mauro. From his writing it's apparent the he wasn't educated and likely came from a lower class family. Already in 1619, Greco started keeping a notebook of tactics and particularly clever games and he took up the custom of giving copies of his manuscripts to his wealthy patrons. In Rome Monsignor Corsino della casa Minutoli Tegrini, Cardinal Savelli and Monsignor Francisco Buoncompagni all received copies (of which there are extant copies, dated 1620 in the Corsiniana library in Rome, under the title, Trattato del nobilissimo gioco de scacchi).… Leer más

Deutsche Schachzeitung was the first German chess magazine. Founded in 1846 by Ludwig Bledow under the title Schachzeitung der Berliner Schachgesellschaft, it took the name Deutsche Schachzeitung in 1872. (Another magazine used the title Deutsche Schachzeitung from 1846 to 1848.) When it ceased publication in December 1988 it was the oldest existing magazine in the world, having been published regularly since its founding in 1846 except for a five-year break (1945-1949) during World War II. Since January 1989, the Deutsche Schachzeitung was merged in the Deutsche-Schachblatter - Schach-Report which was edited in Hollfeld. The resulting magazine appeared with the names of both former magazines on its cover till December 1996. Since January 1997, this… Leer más
