Half-tone plates; figures; map, folding; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 260 pages; 1922 Oxford at the Clarendon Press. Large format HC/DJ. 1st edition. Soundly bound and bright copy in the original buff paper dust jacket. 32 fine half-tone plates, 23 text drawings, large folding map of Southern Russia with details of important finds. Just superficial shelf bumping to corners. Decorative roundels in gilt to cover and gilt title lettering at spine very bright and fresh. Light foxing to endpages and offset toning from the jacket flaps. Scarce original dust jacket is rubbed and worn at edges; split between the front panel and spine edge has been archivally mended with japanese tissue tap on the reverse surface. Lower 2 inches of the spine panel missing, but all title lettering preserved and bright at spine. Panels toned with some light soiling. Mild damp evidence to spine panel and an open snag of 2 inched to the rear jacket panel has emnants of two old tape repairs with a longer closed tear trailing from the open snag. Prior ownership of Alexander Brown Griswold; his small cut paper bookplate covered by his Breezewood Foundation plate on the front pastedown. Brown was a prominent collector and scholar of of Buddhist and SE Asian antiquities; he was a partner in the Alex Brown & Sons institutional bankers of Baltimore and New York.
