Designer bookbinding in grey-green cloth, with pictorial design in red and blue on front and back boards, titled in gold on front and spine, with the monogram of Eric Pape; green and brick red patterned endpapers; [ii], [i]-[x], 1-[425], [iii]ppp; with 2pp of publisher's ads at rear for other titles by Austin; 4 full-page color halftone illustrations by Eric Pape. A handsome copy, slightly rubbed, lower board lightly scuffed, prelims loose, but overall clean: about Very Good.
Mary Austin was an author and activist concerned with the American Southwest, whose "lectures [...] did much ot introduce academic audiences and the general public to the culture and conditions of Native Americans in the Southwest" (ANB). This, her first novel, is set in early nineteenth-century California.
