Rogers an English poet of the Romantic School is best remembered as a witty conversationalist and as a friend of greater poets. On Wordsworth's death, in 1850, Rogers was offered the laureateship, which he refused.

His visit to Italy in 1815 suggested to him the idea of a poem descriptive of that country, which Byron had not then handled in the fourth canto of Childe Harold.
