Moryson traveled Continental Europe and the eastern Mediterranean lands during most of the decade of the 1590s. The work is of much value to historians for the detail Moryson observed traditions, social and economic conditions, and local customs. He was the personal secretary to Lord Mountjoy, commander-in-chief of England's army in Ireland. [2] He earned the reputation of being "a sober-minded and veracious traveller."[3]
