Very good copies all in contemporary half calf over marble boards. Spine bands and panel edges somewhat rubbed and toned as with age. Remains a particularly well-preserved set; tight, bright, clean and strong.; 8vo 8"" - 9"" tall; Physical description; 3 v. ([4], xxxiii, [1], 298; [4], 327, [1]; [4], 371, [1], 3, [1] p.) ; 8°. With advertisment (author's note about story) before fly-title in volume 1. With 2 leaves of publisher's catalogue at end of v. 3. ""Printed by James Ballantyne and Co. Edinburgh."" -- t.p. verso. The final page of volume 2 and in volume 3 the final page and p. [372], are blank. In volume 1, pages 159-306 are misnumbered 151-298; also in this volume the chapter numbering is erratic, proceeding IV, VII, VII [pages 64, 81, 100]--cf. Todd and Bowden. In all three volumes the first doubleton, consisting of half-title and title, is set in duplicate, with two settings used for all three volumes in an indescriminate way. The exclamation mark after 'depart!' (in the title quotation) is either over the second 'R' in 'PRIOR' and the dash above the date measures 13mm; or the exclamation mark is over the space between 'O' and 'R' and the dash above the date measures 10 mm. -- cf. Todd and Bowden. This edition of ""Ivanhoe"" has two issues: only the first volume is altered, and can be identified by the press mark 9 on p. iii and on p. iv l. 6 the first word 'Peter' in the first issue. In the second issue where there are 2 variants, the press mark on p. iii is either 2 or not present and on p. iv l. 6 the first words are 'St Peter'. The final gathering Y of volume 1 is in duplicate setting, either with single quotation mark after 'journey' page 296 line 11 and in some copies figure 3 page 297, or with double mark and no figure.-- cf Todd and Bowden. Subject; Great Britain - History - Richard I, 1189-1199 - Fiction.
