Starting in the 19th century, it first shows Paul Hardin, the central character, against the background of his home, dominated by his father, the sternly Puritanical John Hardin. The elder Hardin is a manufacturer of buggies, and one sees him, through the book, a principal in the fight for prohibition. The story follows Paul through the years, from youthful days all the way to maturity, until his mistakes and virtues stand opposed when the great decision of his life faces him. .
