Palmer, an Assistant Keeper at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, has provided a comprehensive introduction to the fascinating story of jade~what it is, where it came from, how it was carved and how it was used.. Good/none. see pictures Jade a spring art book...this is a light green cloth covered book with one Japanese symbol on the cover embossed gold. Gold letters named Jade in the name of the author on the spine the spine is in good shape there is some edge where group of fading on the edges of the cloth finish but it's not bad there is a little bit of rounding up the top and bottom corners of the book, which I think is due to the heaviness of the fabric used to wrap as a cover. There is an inscription first page of three lines Wonderful color photographs examples of objects throughout the book and an introduction describing all mineralogy of jadeite,nethrite, or simply Jade and discussions about methods used to work with it for someone interested in mineralogy or collecting objects this would give them an excellent basis to be somewhat cognizant...many times people that are interested in starting collections like to have background research material in this book would be excellent for that....The name jade refers to two different stones, nephrite and jadeite, which have similar properties. Nephrite, the jade carved in China for thousands of years, is a calcium magnesium silicate with hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale (slightly softer than quartz). Although not especially hard, nephrites structure of tightly packed microscopic fibers makes it uniquely tough. In fact, it is the toughest (hardest to break) of all stones, which makes it the perfect material for delicate carvings. Translucent to opaque, nephrites subdued colors include creamy white, celadon, spinach, russet, and yellow Jadeite (fei cui in Chinese) is a sodium aluminum silicate, slightly harder to scratch and a bit less tough than nephrite. Jadeites colors are more vivid and include green, white, russet, black, and a delicate lavender- Nephrites combination of moderate hardness and extreme toughness makes it difficult and tedious to carve. This was all the more true for carvers long ago, who worked solely by laborious abrasive grinding using foot-powered treadle lathes. Although nephrite is not all that rare in the common colors and grades, there is a strong temptation to foist a cheaper, easier-to-carve pseudo-jade onto the unwary buyer. These lesser hard-stones are sometimes offered, dishonestly, as a type of jade. So when buying jade, first assure yourself that what you are buying really is jade. Spring Books, London, 1967. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Ordinary/Poor. 44 pages of text, then 54 color plateson unpaginated pages. Black and white illustrated frontispiece showing a facimile of an old Oriental page on how to work jade. The text is illustrated with the aforementioned plates as well as 8 black & white text drawings. Green coloured boards with gilt Oriental symbol to the lower right hand corner of the front panel and gilt writing to the spine. Bumping to the head and to the heel of the spine and there is also fading of the cloth. Fading of the cloth has also occurred to the top and bottom book edges and there is little " flaring " to the top right-hand corner of the front panel. Fading has also occurred on other places of the boards as well. Light browning to the paper edges. Browning to the end papers and to the internal pages and there are a few handling marks as well.
